Do you sit up at night worrying if your JES2 is going to run out of spool space? Did you define enough JOEs? What about BERTs (and what the heck is a BERT and why am I being told "Don't run out of BERTs")? Well JES2 is being enhanced to reduce some of your concerns. With new SMF reporting, the initialization checker, privileged space, and new in 3.1 job resource limits and resource groups, you can get a handle on JES2 resource usage and prevent runaway jobs from stopping your systems. Some controls are active out of the box, but other require some configuration. Come learn what's available and sleep better (just not during the session).

In this session, the speaker will provide some hints and tips for working in ISPF, and will also review the updates made to ISPF in z/OS 3.1. Time permitting, there will also be a demo of some of these features (both new and old).

Ever wondered how logstreams work? Who uses them? How to define them? Tune them? This session targets a wide audience and will start with logstream basics: What is a logstream? The services provided by the MVS Logger. The utilities used to define logstreams and an explanation of the major keywords. What are staging datasets and offload datasets? When are they created and deleted? How do we get a report with the current logstream definitions? Then we will look at some of the z/OS components that take advantage of the technology like OPERLOG, LOGREC and SMF. We will touch on subsystem use of logstreams like CICS. I will show some operator commands that can assist us in understanding our Logger status. Finally, we will look at a user case in which specifying inappropriate logstream parameters had a severe performance impact.

Come to this session to find all about the exciting hybrid cloud integration solution on z/OS using zCX. The zCX for OpenShift product, is aimed to provide an open, enterprise-level cloud-native tools and cloud architecture components on z/OS using zCX to integrate z/OS with your hybrid cloud infrastructure. In this session, we will discuss latest new features, enablement around zCX for OpenShift, and discuss how it can significantly expand what you can do with your z/OS systems by allowing you to deploy containerized Linux on Z software side by side with your z/OS software, middleware, and data while preserving a z/OS operational model and z/OS Qualities of Service. We will also discuss resource requirements, licensing, service, support, and capabilities for this product. In addition, we will highlight few use cases that you can start exploring and will discuss co-location performance benefits comparison to x86 workload deployments.

This session will demonstrate cradle to grave aspects of z/OS Containers. We will show how to build an application as a container, then how to deploy it, how to monitor it and to end the container. We will also survey the wealth of new capabilities provided for the entire lifecycle of the container.

This session provides an overview of the various container technologies available on z/OS (including zCX) and provides the audience with a good basic understanding of what z/OS Containers is all about and how applications built for z/OS can take advantage of this new technology.

The presenter continuously installed a new z/OS 3.1 driver every month from December 2022 through September 2023 and experimented with its new functions as they became available. He will show you how these new functions operate and provide you with warnings, hints & tips, caveats, etc. based upon his early experiences and post-GA follow-up.
